Exerpts of the Sunday morning sermon for the Church of Christ, Santa Maria, CA for November 25, 2007
JESUS IS GOD
1. THE ONE GOD IS CREATOR; JESUS IS CREATOR, THEREFORE JESUS IS GOD. Ephesians 3:9 "And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:" 2. WE ARE NOT TO WORSHIP ANYONE BUT GOD.
Genesis 1:1 - "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth."
Colossians 1:16,17 - "For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: 17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist."
Revelation 3:14 - "And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God." The word "beginning" (ARCHE) means "that by which anything begins to be, the origin, active cause" (Thayer, p. 77.) Christ is the "active cause" or "origin" of the creation of God.
Hebrews 1:2-8 - ". . . hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, . . . by whom also he made the worlds; who being the brightness of his glory, the express image of his person . . . but unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is forever and ever." Jesus is Creator - "he made the worlds" - "Worlds" is translated from AION. The usual and standard meaning is age, human lifetime, perpetuity of time, eternity and the like. Thayer (p. 19) tells us that in our passage — "by meton. of the container for the contained," that is, the worlds or the universe, "i.e. the aggregate of things contained in time." On the word AION in its relation to KOSMOS, see Trench § LIX.
John 1:3 "All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made."
1 Corinthians 8:6 "But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him."
Exodus 20:3-5 "Thou shalt have no other gods before me. 4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: 5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;"
Acts 10:25-26 "And as Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him, and fell down at his feet, and worshipped him. 26 But Peter took him up, saying, Stand up; I myself also am a man."
Revelation 19:10 "And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy."
Revelation 22:8 "And I John saw these things, and heard them. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which showed me these things. 9 Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God."
Mat 4:10 quoting Deut 6:13 "Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve."
3. JESUS IS WORSHIPED. (Matthew 2:2; 15:9; 20:20)
Matthew 2:11 "And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshiped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh."
Matthew 8:2 "And, behold, there came a leper and worshiped him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean."
Matthew 9:18 "While he spake these things unto them, behold, there came a certain ruler, and worshiped him, saying, My daughter is even now dead: but come and lay thy hand upon her, and she shall live."
Matthew 14:33 "Then they that were in the ship came and worshiped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God."
Matthew 15:25 "Then came she and worshiped him, saying, Lord, help me."
Matthew 28:9 "And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshiped him."
Matthew 28:17 "And when they saw him, they worshiped him: but some doubted."
Mark 5:6 "But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshiped him,"
John 9:38 "And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshiped him."
Heb 1:6 (KJV) "And again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him."
Our prayer is for you to be able to say that truly God is among these believers who worship at the Santa Maria, CA Church of Christ.
